History
Just a short walk (300 metres) west of our current church is an ancient graveyard, believed to be the site of a church since early Christian times. By the early 1600s, that church had fallen into ruin and was eventually abandoned.
In 1792, a new church—known as Kilmore Church—was built nearby. It served the community not only as a church but also as a school and gathering place. In 1976, the building was carefully taken down and rebuilt at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, where its story continues.
Our present church, Christ Church, was built in 1870 and is known for its beautiful tower. Designed by the renowned architect Sir Thomas Drew, it was the last Church of Ireland building constructed before the Church was disestablished. Sir Thomas also designed St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast, and worked on both St Patrick’s and Christ Church Cathedrals in Dublin.
Over the years, Christ Church has been a central part of community life. One of our long-time parishioners, the late Bobby Nelson, remembered lighting the oil lamps and ringing the church bell with his father before services. His stories brought to life Harvest Sundays filled with people, the impact of World War II on our community, and the strong ties between local churches.
We’re more than just a historic building—we’re a living, growing church family. Whether you’re exploring faith for the first time or looking for a new church home, we’d love to welcome you.
